High school is great, right? At least, everyone seems to think so. Parties, friends, teachers who want to teach you stuff…yeah, I can’t even finish that without laughing. Sorry.
High school definitely has the potential to be really neat, but for a lot of people it can also really, really suck. One of the things that makes it suck even worse than when all of us old people were in school is the technology. Cell phones, smart phones, social media, all of that stuff means one single rumor can spread before you even know it’s happening.
Think of it like this. All the adults keep telling you how great your life is since you don’t have any worries or responsibilities, but back when they were younger people who didn’t have any worries or responsibilities, there was no technology like there is today. Let’s pretend that back then, someone took a picture of someone changing clothes in the locker room at school. In order to show everyone a picture of you with your pants down and your butt showing, first they had to use a Polaroid camera because you couldn’t develop naked pictures of people at the instant photo place. Second, they had to walk the picture around to everyone they knew and show it to them, without having someone tell and report it to a teacher.
Now, it’s all different. Someone takes a picture on a smartphone of you doing something at a party that you really wish you hadn’t done, and that picture arrives in 500 other people’s cell phones via text message instantly. It ends up on Facebook, where other people send it to all of their FB friends. God forbid you should be lucky enough to have it caught on video and posted to YouTube, where if you’re really lucky it can end up on Tosh.0.
Don’t let anyone lie to you. If you can just make it to adulthood, you’ll be fine. College will be a blast, assuming you make it that far with your self-esteem intact. Now that I’m a grown-up, NO ONE CARES where I buy my clothes or if these jeans are out of style. No one thinks about my dumb hobbies or if I’m a geeky bookworm. My friends and I literally call each other to share the news that Walmart is having a sale on something, and I have one friend who is the queen of finding bargains at the thrift store.
Just make it that far, and it will be okay.
